Welcome Back! A Fresh Start for the New Year
Happy New Year, students and families of BCHS! I hope you had the chance to rest, recharge, and spend time with those you care about during the holiday break. As we step into January, we have the opportunity to embrace a fresh start—a blank page to set goals and refocus on what matters most.
The start of a new year is the perfect time to think about the person you want to become and the habits you want to build. Remember, you don’t have to make drastic changes overnight; small, steady steps can lead to big improvements.
Here are some ideas and strategies to help you kick off the year with intention:
Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound goals are easier to stick to. Instead of saying, “I want to get better grades,” try, “I will review my notes for 15 minutes after each class to prepare for quizzes and tests.” Click here to watch a short video about setting SMART Goals for Students.
Think about what truly makes you happy and fulfilled. Do you want to improve relationships with friends or family? Focus on self-care? Try something new, like joining a club or learning a skill? Write down what’s most important to you and why. Click here to be linked to a great site with some reflective questions to ask yourselves as we begin this new year.
Consistency is key to success. Use a planner or app to organize your time, set reminders for homework or projects, and block out time for relaxation and hobbies. A balanced routine can help you feel less overwhelmed. For more information on why having healthy routines are important, click here.
Take a moment each day to reflect on something you’re grateful for. It could be as simple as a sunny morning or a kind word from a friend. Gratitude helps shift your focus from stress to positivity. Change doesn’t happen overnight, and that’s okay. If you stumble, treat yourself with compassion. Think of setbacks as opportunities to learn and grow. Click here for information from Psychology Today about how gratitude can help teens stay motivated.
If you ever feel stuck or overwhelmed, remember that you’re not alone. Friends, family, teachers, and counselors like me are here to help. Sometimes, simply talking through your thoughts can make a big difference.
As semester one ends, exam season offers students a chance to demonstrate their learning and build essential skills like time management, critical thinking, and resilience. Proper preparation boosts confidence, reduces stress, and improves performance. Parents play a vital role in supporting teens during this time by offering structure, encouragement, and a calming presence. Here are practical ways to help teens study effectively and manage stress for a successful exam season.
